Dear MSF Patients,

Funding for IUI has now been used up for the remainder of the Ministry of Health budgetary year ending March 31, 2019

As of 2015, IUI treatments ceased to be funded by OHIP, and became part of the provincial Ontario Fertility Program (OFP).  This change resulted in there being a fixed number of funded IUI cycles available per clinic in Ontario.

This year, demand for IUI treatments exceeded the amount of funding Mount Sinai Fertility received from the province.   As a result, patients who undergo an insemination procedure after November 27, 2018 will be asked to pay for the full costs of the IUI cycle.

How does this affect you?

Patients have the following options:

  1. Pay the $725 IUI fee that would otherwise have been covered by the OFP program. This fee is in addition to the $500 lab fee and cost of medications incurred by patients for each IUI cycle.
  2. Defer your IUI cycle until April 2019 when we expect OFP funding will be available again. In this case, expect to starta cycle after March 15, 2019 with the IUI procedure falling in April
  3. Discuss with your physician, the possibility of doing an IVF cycle – or alternate treatment option, if available.

If you have questions about the Ontario Fertility Program (OFP), please refer to the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care website at www.ontario.ca/page/get-fertility-treatments.     If you have questions for your doctor about your treatment options, please contact the office of your fertility specialist directly.
