Who is Dr. Heather Shapiro
Dr. Heather Shapiro serves as a cornerstone of Mount Sinai Fertility, bringing an unparalleled level of expertise and wisdom to patient care that has become a hallmark of our clinic’s operations. Dr Shapiro is a Full Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology (and cross-appointed to the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology). She has been the Vice-Chair of Education in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Toronto, and President of the Canadian Fertility and Andrology Society (CFAS), for which she currently is part of the team that develops practice guidelines for the specialty. She is equally passionate about education. She is the founder and director of the first and only MHSc program in Clinical Embryology, which has raised the bar for patient care in the IVF lab.
Her impressive academic commitment is further distinguished by her significant contributions as a former member of the Executive Committee of the Faculty Council in the Faculty of Medicine, as well as many executive positions within the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

One of Dr. Shapiro’s most notable achievements is her foundational role in establishing the first Master in Health Science degree program for embryology in Canada. This program is a testament to her vision for maintaining high standards of practice of the whole team nationwide and her commitment to the advancement of fertility science. She is seen as an important mentor to legions of practicing obstetricians, gynecologist and fertility specialists across the county.
