New Study Highlights Need for Greater Awareness About Folic Acid and Pregnancy

A recent CityNews Toronto article sheds light on a new study revealing that one in four Canadian women are unaware of the crucial role folic acid plays during pregnancy. Folic acid, a B-vitamin, is vital in preventing neural tube defects (NTDs) in babies, such as spina bifida and anencephaly.

Health Canada recommends women who might become pregnant take 400 micrograms of folic acid daily, starting at least three months before conception. This simple and effective step greatly reduces the risk of NTDs and supports the healthy development of a baby’s brain and spine.

Dr. Claire Jones, a physician at Mount Sinai Fertility (MSF), and Vrati Mehra, a 4th-year medical student and MSF fellow, emphasize the importance of raising awareness. “Folic acid supplementation is a key aspect of preconception care,” Dr. Jones explains. “Many NTDs are preventable with proper education and planning.”

Mount Sinai Fertility is committed to empowering women with knowledge and personalized care to support a healthy pregnancy. Speak to your healthcare provider about folic acid supplements and include folate-rich foods like leafy greens and fortified grains in your diet.
