A Canadian first: Baby conceived and born after uterine transplant
For the first time, a baby has been conceived and born in Canada following a uterine transplant.
Mount Sinai Fertility was proud to play an important role in this historic journey. Under the clinical supervision of Dr. Nigel Pereira, our team provided the specialized fertility expertise needed to achieve the pregnancy through IVF and embryo transfer into the transplanted uterus.
The healthy baby was delivered at Mount Sinai Hospital by Sinai Health’s Complex Obstetric Surgery team — the result of remarkable collaboration across fertility, obstetrics, surgery and transplant care.
For people born without a uterus, this milestone represents new possibilities and new hope for the future of reproductive care in Canada.
